Susato Kildare

Instruments- discuss specific whistle features, brands, tweaking, problems, questions

Yes. Great whistle. It's what I play now. The Oriole is not far behind in sound and volume.

i have some Burkes but don't really play them much. I don't worry about the Susatos.

I don't worry about dropping my plastic whistles like my metal ones. Dents.

As far as punch? Oh yea. Susatos have that great bell note.

Great breath control. Just love how I can use my breath or finger for vibrato.

I've got a Kildare wide bore in D. Love it! I also have the Oriole in D. Cheaper version. Love it too. Susatos have a great strong bell note. (lowest note).

Lesson learned.

General penny whistle or music discussions

That's funny....loved the Honeymooners. Bet you start looking at your whistles.

Funny but true. When I teach my beginning whistle classes I talk about moisture. Fact of nature especially in metal whistles. How to clear. 1. Tap the whistle on your pants leg. 2. Cover the windway and blow. 3. Never "Bless" the audience by shaking your whistle at them. Last....suck it up. It's your moisture. Won't kill you. You should see the look on their faces.

But I didn't make this up. Read it on a whistle site. Think about it. You whistle clogs in the middle of a tune. Tap? Cover and blow? Bless? Nope....suck it up Buttercup.....more to follow.

Naw...fuzz. I carry my whistles in the second portion of a two dulcimer bag. And I might put them in my back pocket while setting up. The whistle is a Becker A PVC whistle. I love it. $15.00. Great bang for the buck. And I have a high end A whistle. Over $200.00

Check your whistle before you play. We played a gig yesterday and I played my A whistle. Red is The Rose. I had practiced it 30 min before leaving. But when I got my whistle out and played, I knew something was wrong. I struggled thru...After we finished I looked down the windway. Yup...whistle fuzz.

Lesson learned.....

Rethinking pennywhistle.

Whistle playing techniques - questions/help

Jan brought a whistle home from a business trip in 1998. At that time Titanic was hot. I started looking everywhere for whistles and music. Most of what I found was Irish music. No problem. I love it. Fast forward to 2006. I got interested in mountain dulcimer and joined a club. They played a lot of Old Time, some Irish type tunes and some Gospel tunes.

My point is you can play a pennywhistle on just about any genre. For me, I started concentrating on the tunes we play at our club. So think beyond "Irish" only. Enjoy what you like in music. Have fun on the journey!

Using mountain dulcimer tab to play pennywhistle.

Like I said, I have to go back and read your article at FOTMD. I kind of see where your going with this and will work on wrapping my brain around it. Thanks.

Brother Steve Whistle a great site for beginners. Highly recommend it. Helps if you read music but the sound samples can help you as well.

I'm terrible about modes even though you do a great job on FOTMD.

You can play D tunes with an A whistle. As well as G tunes with a D whistle. Is this what you mean? When you have a problem, you half hole the note.

Using mountain dulcimer tab to play pennywhistle.

General penny whistle or music discussions

As a mountain dulcimer player and pennywhistle player I had an aha moment early one morning (2am-ish) when I couldn't sleep. The melody line of DAD tab equates to the holes on a D whistle. Look at Boil Them Cabbage. 0 = no holes open. 1 = 1 hole open and so on. 7 = no holes open but blowing harder to reach the second octave d. I've taught at several festivals using this. It works! I don't have any formal music training. I'm an ear player. When you start looking at other songs you learn "tricks". Take Rosin The Beau. Starts on the middle string A note. Two choices....Play the second octave A or just skip it. It won't be missed if your playing with other instruments. Hope this gets your juices flowing. Enjoy the ride.
